Fr. Anatole Mauduit, an ancestor on my mother's side was a missionary in Singapore in the late 1840s.  He worked with the Chinese community in the jungle and then bought a piece of land from the East India Company and built the first parish church at Bukit Timah.  He died there in 1858, at the age of 41.  At left is his tombstone.  Below is an example of his handwriting.
